Authorities identify body found floating in Mississippi River

NEW ORLEANS — The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office has positively identified the body found floating in the Mississippi River earlier this week as that of 42-year-old Dave Hebron.

New Orleans Police spokesman Juan D. Barnes Sr. in a news release Friday said coroner's investigators performed an autopsy and confirmed Hebron's identity. The coroner also ruled the cause of death as drowning.

Hebron's body was recovered by firefighters late Wednesday.

Authorities had been looking for a man that was seen swimming in the river Tuesday night. Witnesses told police the man went under and never resurfaced. Clothes and a phone were found at the edge of the river.

Hebron's mother told police that her son had been staying at a homeless shelter after traveling to New Orleans from Jena.
