Coast Guard suspends search for man who disappeared during Mississippi River swim

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a man who went missing while swimming in the Mississippi River near New Orleans.

Lt. Josiah J. Starr of Coast Guard Sector New Orleans told local media Wednesday night that the search has been suspended, a little more than 24 hours after authorities received reports that a man went missing Tuesday around 7:30 p.m.

Witnesses said he was swimming in the Mississippi River near the Jax Brewery building when he went under and never resurfaced.

Witnesses said clothes and a phone found at the edge of the river belonged to the man who disappeared. Police believe the items belonged to 42-year-old Dave Hebron. Hebron's mother told police that he had been staying at a homeless shelter after traveling to New Orleans from Jena.
