RALEIGH, North Carolina — The president of North Carolina's community college system is leaving to become president of Northern Virginia Community College.

Scott Ralls will assume his new position in early September, replacing Robert Templin, who retired in February. Ralls has served as president of North Carolina's 58-college system since 2008.

The chancellor of Virginia's community college system, Glenn DuBois, announced Ralls' appointment Thursday.

The Virginia school has 75,000 students on six campuses near Washington, D.C., and is the second-largest community college in the country. In North Carolina, Ralls led more than 780,000 students enrolled in curriculum and continuing education classes.

The Virginia system has 23 community colleges on 40 campuses that serve about 400,000 students a year.
