State trooper suffered minor injuries when cruiser struck by wrong-way driver in Barnstable

BARNSTABLE, Massachusetts — An 80-year-old man police say drove the wrong way on Route 6 in Barnstable and injured a state trooper is facing charges.

State police say troopers responded to reports of a driver heading east on the westbound side of the highway at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Two troopers located the pickup truck and were slowing traffic behind their cruisers to protect other motorists when the wrong-way vehicle approached and struck one of the cruisers.

The injured trooper was treated and released from Cape Cod Hospital.

State police say the 80-year-old man has a medical condition and should not have been driving. He will be summoned to court on charges of negligent operation and wrong-way violation. Police will also move to have his license revoked.

No names were released.
