Lawmakers ask for education accountability changes that make testing less frequent


SARATOGA, Wyoming — Lawmakers are asking for more flexibility in how schools are evaluated under the No Child Left Behind Act.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1BM15MC) the education accountability committee voted Wednesday to draft a letter for the congressional delegation asking for changes in the next reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Members argue the adequate progress requirement has led to too much testing and cheating.

The letter will argue in favor of a bill that would replace the federal education law and make testing less frequent. It would also remove the teacher accountability requirement.

Committee members also voted to focus the Technical Advisory Committee on school leader accountability, training and professional development policies.

The committee's next meeting is Oct. 29 in Casper.
