EL PASO, Texas — Police have identified a man fatally shot by an El Paso officer during a traffic stop last week.
Authorities said Tuesday that a female officer shot 33-year-old Andy Martinez, who refused her demand that he drop his handgun on Friday night. They say Martinez was a passenger in a vehicle that officers pulled over for displaying an expired registration ticket.
As one of the officers was talking with the driver, police say Martinez got out of the car with his handgun. The female officer says she told Martinez to drop his weapon, but he refused to do so and yelled at her.
Police say the female officer's name won't be released until a grand jury makes a decision on whether she will be indicted. The shooting is under investigation.
