SPARTANBURG, South Carolina — The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office has released the names of four of the five people killed in a weekend apartment fire.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said in a news release his investigators had to use extensive medical and dental records to identify the victims. They are 6-year-old Nehemiah Smith, 8-year-old Israel Smith, 10-year-old Martin Curcio and 19-year-old Martina Curcio.

Clevenger says his office is still trying to confirm the identity of the fifth victim.

Authorities say the fire started in a first-floor apartment around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at the Southern Pine Apartments. It spread to a unit on the second floor, then raced through the open attic and into all the apartment building which lacked safety features and was built in 1974.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
