MONTPELIER, Vermont — Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy is reminding the state's dairy farmers to enroll in a new price protection program.

He stresses that federal officials have extended for a week the deadline for signing up for the new dairy farm production price insurance program to Dec. 5.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack also extended until Dec. 15 the comment period for the rule.

The Margin Protection Program is a voluntary insurance program that enables dairy farmers to protect themselves from low prices.

The program protects farmers when the difference between milk prices and feed costs fall below an amount selected by the farmer. Minimum coverage costs $100.
