MELBOURNE, Australia — Aaron Mooy scored from the penalty spot to give Melbourne City a 1-0 win over defending champion Brisbane on Sunday, lifting the club into the top six in Australian football's A-League.
Daniel Bowles brought down Mate Dugandzic in the 49th minute and Mooy sent goalkeeper Jamie Young the wrong way, slotting the ball into the left corner to give City its first home win of the season.
Melbourne has won only twice in nine matches this season and both wins have come at the expense of Brisbane. After last week's 5-1 loss to Wellington, Melbourne needed a sharp recovery to prevent its season from stalling.
Brisbane suffered its first loss in three matches under Frans Thijssen, who took over as coach after the sacking of championship-winning coach Mike Mulvey.
