PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — More than 27,000 Rhode Islanders have signed up for health coverage on the exchange created by the federal health care overhaul.

HealthSource RI said on Thursday that 80 percent of people who had coverage on the exchange last year have signed up again this year. Enrollment ends on Feb. 15.

Around 25,000 people had coverage on the exchange at the end of 2014.

HealthSource says more than 3,000 people have also been covered under plans for small businesses.

The future of HealthSource RI has been called into question, as some lawmakers have expressed concern about its operating cost, estimated to be at least $17 million annually. Rhode Island is running its own exchange and has to find a way to pay for it when federal funding runs out.
