CORALVILLE, Iowa — An inmate serving a 50 year sentence for second-degree murder has died in a Coralville prison.
The Iowa Department of Corrections announced Wednesday that 42-year-old Matthew John Irving died of natural causes. Officials say he collapsed to the floor in a hospice care unit while being assisted from a bathroom to a bed. He was pronounced dead by a physician on duty.
He had previously been diagnosed with cancer that spread to his lungs and bones. Irving was assigned to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center.
He was convicted in 2014 in the death of 55-year-old Rebecca Hall, of Marshalltown, whose body was found in a van on the side of a road.
Irving was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
