COLUMBUS, Mississippi — The Columbus mayor's office says the city's new police chief will begin his duties on Feb. 19.

Oscar Lewis III, who was chosen from among three finalists for the job on Jan. 19, is currently serving as police chief in Waynesboro.

Mayor Robert Smith said in a statement received by The Commercial Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1nLs2ze) he will swear in Lewis at the next city council meeting on Feb. 16.

Fred Shelton will continue to serve as interim chief until Lewis' arrival. Shelton has served in that capacity since November, when he was appointed as interim chief after the resignation of Chief Tony Carleton.
