PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — The Rhode Island Convention Center Authority says it is moving forward with plans to build a parking garage at a courthouse in downtown Providence.

The authority's board approved issuing requests for proposals for architect, engineering and project manager services.

The General Assembly authorized the authority to issue $43 million in bonds for the construction of a multi-level garage at the Garrahy Judicial Complex, on now-vacant land that was freed up when Interstate 195 was moved. The quasi-public agency operates the Rhode Island Convention Center parking garages.

The garage cannot be built until the purchase and sales agreements for three lots in the area are approved by the 195 Redevelopment Commission.

Plans call for the garage to have more than 1,000 parking spaces and room for shops.
