PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — The contractor responsible for building the Interstate 195 bridge over the Providence River is asking the state to pay for repairs to the structure's guardrail.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1Q7SB8H ) correspondence obtained through a public records request indicates that Cardi Corporation agreed to repair the guardrail "under protest."

Cardi wants the state to enter into non-binding mediation to decide who should pay.

A spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation says the state hasn't agreed to mediation and that repairs are the company's responsibility.

The problem with the railing was discovered in 2013 when a vehicle crashed into it. Crews realized the guardrail was improperly installed after examining it.

The state has commissioned several engineering studies since then costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to determine how it happened.
