NEW BRIGHTON, Pennsylvania — A man has been charged with criminal homicide in the stabbing death of a woman after an altercation in a western Pennsylvania apartment.

Police in Beaver County were called to the Mulberry Apartments in New Brighton at 11 p.m. Saturday and found 59-year-old Deborah Hill-Payne dead of multiple stab wounds.

New Brighton Area police said that while officers were responding to the scene, a man with a cut on his hand stopped police in the parking lot of the police station.

Fifty-two-year-old Kevin Hooks of Chippewa Township was later charged with criminal homicide but told WPXI-TV that he acted in self-defense.

As he was being escorted out of the police department on Sunday morning, he said "She was coming at me with a knife. I was just defending myself."
