Man, woman charged with child abuse after 2-month-old taken to hospital bruised, emaciated

STATESVILLE, North Carolina — The Iredell County Sheriff's Office has charged a man and a woman with child abuse causing serious physical injury after a 2-month-old child was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Sheriff Darren Campbell said his office received a report from Rowan Regional Hospital on Sept. 30 that a child seen there was emaciated and had bruises and marks on her face consistent with abuse. Further medical tests showed the child also had several rib fractures.

The sheriff's office said Tuesday that 26-year-old Samuel Brian Hancock and 19-year-old Arlena Ritchie were both charged following an investigation. Hancock and Ritchie, both from Statesville, are jailed under bonds of $200,000 apiece. It's not known if they have attorneys.

The county's department of social services has taken custody of the infant.
