FULTON, Mississippi — The state auditor's office says it has collected $197,000 from the bond company of Itawamba County Chancery Clerk Jim Witt.

State Auditor Stacey Pickering says the case is one of poor bookkeeping dating back to 2007.

Pickering says said the money will likely be placed in a fund set up by a judge for those who lost it including the State of Mississippi and the county.

Pickering says between August 2007 and January 2013, Witt's office failed to settle money in a timely manner that was collected for redemption of delinquent taxes in property tax sales.

Pickering says in June of 2014, Witt was served with a $503,000 demand for misappropriated funds.

He says Witt is responsible for the loss as chancery clerk.
