APPLING, Georgia — Authorities say a motorcycle crash outside Augusta has killed a former Georgia lawmaker who served at the state Capitol for more than a decade.

The Augusta Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1cuxTnx ) 59-year-old Joey Brush of Appling died Thursday after a car pulled out in front of Brush's Harley Davidson motorcycle. Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris says charged are pending against the driver of the car, who was found at fault in the wreck.

A builder and minister, Brush took office in the Georgia House in 1992 and served in the Senate from 1997 through 2004. Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who served alongside Brush in the Senate, said: "Our state lost a noble Georgian today."

As a legislator, Brush unsuccessfully pushed to repeal the state law requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets.
