NORWOOD, Pennsylvania — Authorities say a Philadelphia-area police officer has been discharged from a hospital after being shot while answering an early morning call about a man believed to be suicidal.
Police in Delaware County said Officer Mark Hanley was hit in the chest and leg when shots were fired through the door of a unit at a Norwood Borough apartment building.
Chief Mark DelVecchio told the Delaware County Daily Times (http://bit.ly/1EqZouG ) that "The officer was saved by his bulletproof vest."
DelVecchio said officers went to the Mohawk Manor Apartments just before 1 a.m. Sunday and were talking to the man when shots were fired.
Hanley was taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center but discharged Sunday afternoon. The other man was taken to Taylor Hospital for treatment of a minor injury and psychiatric evaluation.
