DETROIT — Grand Rapids South Christian held on and Lansing Sexton ran out of time.
Grand Rapids South Christian (12-2) won its second Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state championship in three years with a 28-27 win over Lansing Sexton on Friday night at Ford Field.
It was the Sailors third consecutive trip to the Division 4 state title game. They lost to Marine City 32-14 last year.
"What a game! This is the best feeling in the world," said Grand Rapids South Christian coach Mark Tamminga. "These fellas just refused to lose. That was our mantra all week long."
Grand Rapids South senior quarterback Jon Wassink threw three touchdown passes and rushed for 122 yards and another score.
"Our experience helped us a lot. We've been here before. We know what to do," said Wassink, who completed 14-of-21 passes for 179 yards.
Lansing Sexton quarterback Malik Mack threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another TD.
Time ran out after Mack completed a first down pass on third and 13 to the Sailors 48-yard line. The Big Reds had driven from their own 7-yard line in 1:35.
"This was a great team. A great group of players," Lansing Sexton coach Daniel Boggan III said. "They gave it their all. It just wasn't in the cards for us tonight."
Mack threw a touchdown 29-yard touchdown pass to Kahari Foy-Wait with 10:42 left in the game to pull Lansing Sexton to within 28-27. But Joel Stieglitz missed the extra point attempt that would have tied the game.
Wassink gave the Sailors a 28-14 lead when he ran 68 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage of the second half.
"The senior class is going to go out as champions. I'll never forget this moment," Wassink said.
He threw touchdown passes to Ryan Veenstra (9 yards), Sam Heyboer (41 yards) and Eric VanVoorst (20 yards) in the first half.
Gavin Hoskins closed the lead to 28-21 for the Big Reds with a 17-yard touchdown run with 1:05 remaining in the third quarter.
