Alabama man killed in Virginia crash after son-in-law falls asleep while driving the vehicle

PULASKI, Virginia — Authorities say an Alabama man died in a crash in Virginia when his son-in-law lost control of the vehicle after falling asleep behind the wheel.

Multiple outlets reported Wednesday that 80-year-old Charles Cooper of Tuscaloosa died in the crash, and Milton Bell was charged with reckless driving. Authorities say Cooper was secured in a wheelchair and wearing a seatbelt.

Virginia State police say Bell dozed off, lost control of the vehicle and hit a guardrail. He tried to regain control, but hit the guardrail again causing the vehicle to overturn in the center of the road.

Police say the crash happened Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 81 in Pulaski County.

Bell's wife, Carolyn Cooper-Bell, and their son, Aaron Bell, wore seatbelts and suffered minor injuries. Each passenger was from Tuscaloosa.
