CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians activated outfielder David Murphy from the 15-day disabled list Friday.

Murphy strained a right oblique muscle Aug. 9 and was placed on the disabled list the following day. He's batting .262 with seven homers and 55 RBIs in 109 games.

The Indians, who are trying to stay in playoff contention, open a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. Indians manager Terry Francona said Murphy, a left-handed hitter, will be used off the bench and will likely start Sunday against right-handder Hector Noesi.

Murphy signed a two-year, $12 million contract in November.

Infielder Justin Sellers was recalled from Triple-A Columbus. The Indians need an extra bench player because utilityman Mike Aviles is out with a concussion.
