RALEIGH, North Carolina — Police say a woman has been struck and killed as she tried to pick up furniture that fell from a truck on Interstate 540 in north Raleigh.
Investigators told local media outlets that 23-year-old Mayra Perez was killed and 35-year-old Jesus Gomez was hurt around 11:15 p.m. Friday as they tried to retrieve a sofa cushion and small table that fell on I-540.
Police say 42-year-old Nathaniel Harris swerved to avoid the items in the road near the Triangle Town Boulevard exit, but struck the two people. Authorities say he then tried to run away from the wreck, but was arrested a short time later.
Harris is charged with felony hit and run and driving with a revoked license. It wasn't known if he had an attorney.
