CHARLESTOWN, Rhode Island — Police have released the name of an 80-year-old man who died after crashing his bicycle into a parked pickup truck during a Rhode Island bicycle race.

The Providence Journal reports that police on Monday identified the victim as Peter Murphy.

Charlestown police say Murphy was riding south on South County Trail when he struck the rear of the pickup at around noon Saturday. The truck, with two people inside, was parked in the breakdown lane.

Police say Murphy had a helmet but suffered severe head injuries.

The Glastonbury, Connecticut, resident was pronounced dead at South County Hospital.

Police say fellow cyclists told officers Murphy was taking part in the North East Master Cycling Association race being held in Richmond and Charlestown.
