SOUTHPORT, North Carolina — Authorities say a Brunswick County jail inmate who escaped last week has been arrested in Southport after he was found hiding in a camper.

Deputies tell area media outlets that 22-year-old William Hewett of Southport was arrested early Tuesday at his mother's home along with several family members.

Hewett was found in a camper in the woods next to the home.

He escaped from jail when he impersonated his brother, who was also incarcerated and being released last Thursday.

The escape resulted in the firing of a Brunswick County jailer. Authorities are continuing to investigate the breakdown in security.

Hewett was originally in jail on charges including assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping and communicating threats.
