ORLANDO, Florida — A Hernando County sheriff's deputy is in a Tampa hospital after the patrol car he was driving was struck by another vehicle.
Officials say Deputy James Baker's car was travelling westbound approaching the intersection of U.S. highway 301 when it was hit on the driver's side by another car travelling northbound early Saturday morning. Baker was treated at the scene before being flown by medical helicopter to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is not known.
Two people, who were not identified, were in the car that impacted the one driven by Baker. Both fled the scene, but were located of deputies a short time later.
The investigation is being handled by the Florida Highway Patrol.
