NEWARK, New Jersey — A New Jersey doctor who took bribes in exchange for test referrals is going to prison for little more than 3 years.
A federal judge on Thursday sentenced 57-year-old Angelo Calabrese to 37 months in prison. Under terms of his plea agreement, the doctor must forfeit $334,000.
Calabrese had an office in North Arlington.
He admitted accepting more than $130,000 in bribes to refer at least $600,000 in business to Parsippany-based Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services.
Federal prosecutors say 37 people have pleaded guilty in connection with the scheme which netted the company more than $100 million in payments from Medicare and private insurers.
