BURLINGTON, Vermont — Organizations in Vermont and New York working to clean up Lake Champlain will be able to apply for $650,000 in grants.

U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy and the Lake Champlain Basin Program announced the grants Thursday that are intended to address water quality and conservation concerns.

The money will help local organizations respond to serious water quality and conservation concerns as well as work to enhance the region's historic, cultural and recreational resources.

The Lake Champlain Basin Program expects to award more than 50 grants to local watershed groups. The grants will concentrate on conservation, invasive species management and education and outreach.
