DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Civil Service Commission has overturned the firing of a police officer.

The panel voted Tuesday to reinstate 34-year-old Cody Grimes.

Police officials say Grimes had violated policies on conduct and obedience to laws. He'd pleaded guilty in May to criminal mischief after making a deal with prosecutors. He'd been charged with assaulting his former girlfriend on Dec. 27, 2013.

The commission acknowledged Grimes' misconduct but determined his termination was excessive. Grimes will return to work in the coming weeks, but won't receive back pay since his firing in June.

His attorney has declined to comment to The Des Moines Register ( ).

A police spokesman says Grimes will likely undergo some basic training before picking up patrol shifts.
