More than 30,000 people sign up for health care coverage so far on Rhode Island's exchange

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — More than 30,000 people have signed up for coverage on Rhode Island's health insurance exchange during the latest open enrollment period.

HealthSource RI was set up as part of the federal Affordable Care Act.

Enrollment figures released Tuesday show that 30,680 people enrolled for coverage for 2016 so far.

HealthSource RI says nearly all of these people are current enrollees who have been automatically renewed into a 2016 plan.

About 300 people signed up for the first time or returned after using the exchange in a prior year and 570 small employers enrolled.

Open enrollment for 2016 began Nov. 1 and ends Jan. 31.

More than 36,000 people signed up for health care coverage last year. More than 25,000 people signed up in 2014.
