Prosecutor clears white Winston-Salem police officer in wounding of black man

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina — The Forsyth County District Attorney has cleared a white Winston-Salem police officer in the wounding of a black man.

Multiple media outlets reported that District Attorney Jim O'Neill said Officer Larry Blevins did nothing wrong.

Blevins shot 25-year-old Kevin Terrell Harvey of Winston-Salem on July 11. Blevins and another officer were trying to serve involuntary commitment papers on Harvey. His family said Harvey was armed and threatening to kill himself and others.

A State Bureau of Investigation agent said Harvey pointed a gun at Blevins before the officer fired three shots. Harvey fired one shot and jumped from a second-floor window and was taken into custody.

Blevins has been with the department five years and had been on administrative leave during the SBI investigation.

Harvey faces weapons and assault charges.
