Police: Glider pilot injured when aircraft hits power lines, crashes in Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG, Virginia — Virginia State Police say a glider pilot was injured when his aircraft crashed in Blacksburg.

Sgt. Rick Garletts said Thursday that the pilot was airlifted to a hospital and appeared to be communicating with emergency medical personnel. The pilot's name was not immediately released.

Garletts said the pilot was participating in a glider event with the Blue Ridge Soaring Society in New Castle when the aircraft struck some power lines and crashed. No structures on the ground were hit.

He said the Federal Aviation Administration was notified.
