HAGATNA, Guam — The defense has rested its case in the trial of a man accused of killing three Japanese tourists in a Guam resort area.

A forensic psychiatrist was the final defense witness Wednesday. Dr. Martin Blinder says Chad Ryan DeSoto was insane when he went on a rampage last year, running a car onto a sidewalk, ramming into a convenience store, then getting out and stabbing bystanders.

Blinder diagnosed DeSoto with psychotic depression.

DeSoto has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness to aggravated murder in killing the tourists. Eleven others were injured.

Prosecutors are expected to call five rebuttal witnesses Thursday.

The judge has yet to rule on a motion accusing DeSoto of witness tampering and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors say he inappropriately spoke with two witnesses from jail.
