FORT DRUM, New York — Military officials at Fort Drum in northern New York say 500 members of the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team are being deployed this winter to Afghanistan.

Army officials say Friday that the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment will complete training exercises at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana, this month before being sent overseas to advise Afghan National Security Forces for up to nine months.

About 200 soldiers in other elements of the 2nd Brigade returned Thursday to Fort Drum after a nine-month deployment in Afghanistan. Another 1,400 soldiers remain there and are preparing to return.

The Army says the Fort Campbell, Kentucky-based 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division will deploy to Iraq this spring, replacing Fort Drum's 1st Brigade Combat Team.
