1st widespread snow of season in southern South Dakota; up to 8 inches expected in southeast

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota — Southern South Dakota is experiencing significant snowfall and poor traveling conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the southeast, with up to 8 inches of snow expected by Friday evening. Winter weather advisories are posted for other areas south of Interstate 90, with up to 3 inches expected.

Morning commuters in Rapid City and Sioux Falls were dealing with slick roads. Several accidents and backed-up traffic were reported in Sioux Falls.

Forecasters say snow and winds gusting to 20 mph will reduce visibilities in some areas to less than a mile.

It's the first widespread snowfall of the season. Forecasters say the heaviest accumulations are expected from late morning into evening.

Colder temperatures will follow the snow, with highs Saturday only in the mid-20s.
