SANFORD, North Carolina — North Carolina detectives are investigating a fatal shooting involving a Sanford police officer.

The State Bureau of Investigation said Thursday it is taking over the probe of Wednesday's shooting at the request of the Sanford Police Department.

The SBI says Sanford police Officer Brently William Brown was trying to arrest 26-year-old Travis Faison on attempted murder, robbery and assault charges stemming from a shooting last week.

The state investigative agency says Brown headed inside a Sanford home after Faison was spotted ducking inside.

The fatal shooting happened inside the home. The SBI says Faison had a firearm that was recovered.

Faison died at the scene. Brown is on leave during the investigation. City employment records show the 23-year-old has been a Sanford police officer for 14 months.
