WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina — Mike Hughes threw for two touchdowns and ran for 85 yards to help New Bern beat Charlotte Catholic 23-15 on Friday night in the Class 4-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.

Hughes was named the game's most valuable player for the Bears (16-0), who won their third state title. He threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Brennan Soileau late in the first half, then had a 60-yard scoring toss to Rasheed McCoy for a 23-7 lead late in the third quarter.

Jaret Anderson ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars (14-2), the last coming to cut the deficit to 23-15 with 7:58 left. Catholic got one more possession, but Shamond Squires intercepted a pass from John Walton near midfield with 1:51 left to allow New Bern to run out the clock.

Charlotte Catholic was going for its fourth state title and first since 2005.
