SCOTCH PLAINS, New Jersey — Authorities have identified the two men killed when the car they were in struck a tree in northern New Jersey.

Erick Pires, a 19-year-old Newark resident who was driving the car, and 20-year-old Andre Timoteo of Roselle, who was sitting in the front seat, were killed in the crash, which left another man seriously injured.

The accident occurred around 9:45 p.m. Saturday on Route 22 east in Scotch Plains. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but authorities say speed and wet road conditions apparently were contributing factors.

Authorities say it does not appear that any other vehicles were involved in the accident.

The injured passenger, identified only as a 26-year-old Newark man, suffered head trauma in the crash. He remained hospitalized Monday in stable but critical condition.
