VALLEY STREAM, New York — New York State Police have charged a motorist with vehicular homicide and drunken driving following a deadly car crash on Long Island.

Authorities said 23-year-old Bilal Hassan of Brooklyn was attempting to exit the Meadowbrook State Parkway in Nassau County early Thursday morning when he lost control of his 2014 Infiniti. The vehicle struck a tree and burst into flames.

Hassan sustained serious injuries including two broken legs and head trauma. He was taken to a nearby hospital.

The passenger in the car, 23-year-old Malih Takkouche of Brooklyn, was killed.

Hassan has been charged with aggravated vehicle homicide, manslaughter in the second degree, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated.

The incident remains under investigation. It was unknown Thursday if Hassan has an attorney.
