Fire officials investigate after 3 boats catch fire, 2 sink, at Portsmouth marina

PORTSMOUTH, Rhode Island — Rhode Island fire officials are investigating after three boats caught fire, causing two to sink, near Narragansett Bay.

Crews were called to the Hinckley Company marina around 5 a.m. Monday in Portsmouth.

Deputy Chief Michael O'Brien says when firefighters arrived, one boat was already fully engulfed in flames. The fire then spread to the other two vessels.

O'Brien says two boats— a sailboat and cabin cruiser —could not be saved and sank at the dock. All three vessels appeared to be unoccupied and no injuries were reported.

He says crews are working to contain any fuel leaks and prevent contamination to the water.

The cause is under investigation.
