TYLER, Texas — A 27-year-old inmate in an East Texas jail has died after being found unresponsive in his cell.
The Smith County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday identified the inmate as Robert Reed Rowan of Flint. An autopsy has been ordered.
Rowan was discovered unresponsive late Monday afternoon as staff at the jail in Tyler handed out food trays for the evening meal. Emergency personnel were unable to revive Rowan, who on Oct. 24 began serving six months for nonpayment of child support.
The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has been notified of the in-custody death. Texas Rangers will help investigate.
