EMERALD ISLE, North Carolina — A preliminary investigation shows that a deck at a beach house on the North Carolina coast failed this week because of rotten wood and because the fasteners that attached it to the house had failed.

Area media outlets report that there were nine people on the deck of the house in Emerald Isle when it fell five feet on Monday night. One person was taken to the hospital.

An investigation shows the last time there was a permit for work on the deck was 11 years ago.

It's the second deck collapse in as many months and on the same road in the community southeast of Jacksonville.

Twenty people were taken to the hospital on the Fourth of July when a deck collapsed at a nearby house.
