LOS ANGELES — An armed man is dead following a confrontation with police officers in downtown Los Angeles.

Sgt. Ryan Whiteman says officers went to the Arts District around 5 p.m. Saturday after witnesses reported a shirtless man firing a gun in the air.

A witness, Eddie Bustamante, told KCAL-TV that when confronted by police, the man dropped to his knees and pointed his gun at officers, who opened fire in response.

Whiteman said an investigation is underway to determine whether the man was killed by an officer's bullet, or from a self-inflicted gunshot.
