HARLAN, Kentucky — Two eastern Kentucky mining companies say they plan to stop production, which will put 95 people out of work.

The Harlan Daily Enterprise (http://bit.ly/1ATTAUU ) reports Fox Knob Coal Co. Inc. and JAD Coal Co. Inc., both in Harlan County, filed notices this month with the Harlan County judge-executive's office about the job losses. Both stated that they plan to "cease production operations" and the move is expected to be permanent.

The notice says job losses are expected to begin around Jan. 23.

The newspaper reported its efforts to get comments from John A. Collins, who is listed as chief executive officer for both companies, were unsuccessful.

Judge-Executive Dan Mosley called the move "disappointing," but says mine layoffs in the area are becoming more prevalent.
