ALBANY, New York — New York state officials say additional help is available for people in danger of running out of heating oil or having their utility service shut off.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says an additional $33 million in Home Energy Assistance Program assistance is being made available in light of the recent cold snap and additional federal funding. Applications for regular and emergency HEAP benefits will be accepted through Friday, March 27.

Eligible households can normally receive one regular HEAP benefit per winter along with a possible emergency HEAP benefit. But now households that have already received a regular benefit and an emergency benefit can apply for a second emergency benefit.

New York has received $377 million in federal HEAP funding this winter.

Emergency benefits for households can run as high as $575.
