NORTHAMPTON, Massachusetts — A Longmeadow man charged with raping a woman outdoors on the campus of UMass-Amherst in 2013 faces trial.

Twenty-year-old Patrick Durocher is being tried starting Tuesday in Hampshire Superior Court on charges of aggravated rape, kidnapping and assault. He and the victim were UMass students at the time.

Prosecutors say Durocher raped the woman on the lawn outside the Campus Center in September 2013. The alleged attack was witnessed by several people.

Both Durocher and the woman were visibly intoxicated.

Durocher has pleaded not guilty and is free on bail.

His lawyer says jurors should be instructed to consider whether his client's statements to police were voluntary because Durocher was drunk and distraught at the time. He also questioned some of woman's statements to investigators.
