Harris County detention officer shot 5 times trying to stop theft of truck at his home

HOUSTON — An off-duty Harris County detention officer has been shot and wounded outside his apartment in a confrontation with men trying to steal his truck.

The officer, whose name hasn't been released, told deputies he heard someone breaking into his truck late Sunday night, grabbed his gun and ran outside to find two people inside the vehicle.

When they ran and jumped into another pickup truck waiting nearby and tried to flee, they were stopped at a security gate. Authorities say one of the men got out and fired at the officer who was running after them.

The deputy was hit five times. He's being treated at a hospital.

The four men are being sought. Their getaway truck has been found abandoned and burned.
