Police: Man shot by officers in critical condition in eastern Washington

SPOKANE, Washington — The Spokane Police Department says a man is in critical condition at a hospital after two officers responding to a report of a man with a knife opened fire Saturday.

Spokeswoman Teresa Fuller in a news release says police received several calls at about 12:30 p.m. about a man armed with a knife trying to get into their vehicles.

Fuller says police arrived within five minutes and confronted the man. The statement doesn't say why the officers opened fire.

The man received medical aid and was transported to a local hospital. His name hasn't been released.

Fuller says the Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team is investigating.
