PILOT MOUNTAIN, North Carolina — A fire has damaged a tire recycling plant in Pilot Mountain and it's unclear how long it will take to burn itself out.
Multiple media outlets reported the fire was reported 1 a.m. Tuesday at the New River Tire Recycling plant.
Plumes of thick, black smoke shot into the air.
No one was in the building when the fire started and no one was hurt.
About 40 firefighters responded. But Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton says the decision was made to let the fire burn itself out.
County Fire Marshall Doug Jones said the fire started in a storage area. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
The company's website says the plant shreds scrap tires and produces rubber mulch, fuel and material for construction projects.
