Indictment: Driver was drunk when he caused fatal crash on Garden State Parkway

FREEHOLD, New Jersey — A man who prosecutors say was driving drunk when he caused a fatal crash on the Garden State Parkway has been indicted on a vehicular homicide charge.

Monmouth County prosecutors say 26-year-old Bryan Brandt, of Union Township, is also charged with hindering his apprehension. They say Brandt denied he was driving the car when the crash occurred in November 2013, claiming instead that the woman killed in the accident was behind the wheel.

Prosecutors say Brandt was driving a car owned by 22-year-old Paola Torres, who was sitting in the front seat. The pair had been gambling in Atlantic City and were northbound near milepost 96 in Wall Township when Brandt sped through a construction zone and crashed into a wooded area in the median.

A telephone number for Brandt could not be located Tuesday.
