HENDERSONVILLE, North Carolina — A Hendersonville man is prison after pleading guilty to animal cruelty after dead dogs and birds were found at a grooming business.

The Times-News of Hendersonville ( reports that 40-year-old Jeffrey Scott Landers has been sentenced to up to 19 months in prison. He pleaded guilty in May to animal cruelty.

Authorities say that the bodies of nine dogs, in locked kennels and carriers, were found in various stages of decomposition at the business on May 1. Ten birds were also found dead in a bucket.

Eight birds, two dogs and a rabbit were alive and and taken to the Henderson County Animal Shelter.
